Activists Urge Assembly Move on Trans Rights

A powerful demonstration unfolded today in Hyderabad as over 200 activists gathered to protect the constitutional rights of the transgender community. Marking the anniversary of the landmark NALSA judgment, the group submitted a formal petition to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. They are urging the Telangana government to pass an official resolution against the Transgender Persons Amendment Act of 2026.

The protesters, gathered at Dharna Chowk, expressed deep concerns over new federal changes that require medical certification for gender identity. Activists argue that this mandate contradicts the Supreme Court’s earlier ruling, which upheld the right to self-identification. The community feels that these amendments introduce unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles and strip away the personal dignity of transgender individuals.

The petition highlights that the new laws could lead to state-controlled identity, making it harder for many to access legal recognition. Prominent members of the Transgender Welfare Board also endorsed the appeal, calling for immediate state intervention. They believe that Telangana should lead by example in safeguarding the rights of gender-diverse people against regressive national policies.

Speakers at the event shared personal stories of the struggles they face in daily life. They emphasized that true inclusion is not just about welfare schemes but about the fundamental right to exist without being subjected to medical scrutiny. The crowd raised slogans demanding that the state government take a firm stand in the upcoming Assembly session to protect the community’s hard-won progress.

Government officials have acknowledged the petition, noting that the state is committed to social justice. While the Chief Minister’s office has not yet issued a final decision on the resolution, the intensity of today’s protest has placed the issue at the forefront of the state’s political agenda. The community remains hopeful that the leadership will uphold the principles of dignity and equality for all citizens.
