MLC Anantha Babu Arrested in Dramatic Court Move

Police in Rajamahendravaram executed a high-stakes operation today, resulting in the arrest of YSRCP MLC Anantha Udaya Bhaskar, widely known as Anantha Babu. The arrest occurred immediately after the legislator exited the local court complex, where he had appeared alongside his wife, Lakshmi Durga. This development follows a period of intense search by special police teams across several districts.
The arrest is linked to a fresh case involving allegations of witness tampering and intimidation. Four key witnesses in the ongoing investigation of the 2022 murder of driver Veedhi Subrahmanyam approached the authorities recently. They alleged that the MLC and his associates offered them large sums of money to retract their previous statements and issued life threats when the bribes were rejected.
Security was exceptionally tight at the Rajamahendravaram court premises as news of the MLC’s presence spread. Fearing he might evade custody again, the Kakinada police waited for the court session regarding his bail cancellation to conclude. As soon as he stepped out of the building, he was bundled into a police vehicle and shifted to the Sarpavaram Police Station for further interrogation.
This case has reignited political tensions in Andhra Pradesh. The ruling TDP-JSP-BJP coalition has emphasized their commitment to a fair trial, while the YSRCP has faced questions regarding the conduct of its members. The police had earlier formed five special teams to track the MLC after he reportedly went into hiding following the registration of the new intimidation case on April 20.
Legal experts suggest that this arrest significantly weakens the MLC’s position regarding his current bail status. The prosecution is expected to argue that the MLC’s alleged attempt to influence witnesses is a clear violation of bail conditions. The state government has directed the police to ensure a foolproof investigation to protect the integrity of the judicial process.
The local community in Kakinada and Dalit rights organizations have been closely monitoring the situation, demanding justice for the family of the deceased driver. With the MLC now in custody, the focus shifts back to the Sarpavaram station, where officials are preparing to produce him before a magistrate later this evening.
