PM Modi Leads Global Yoga Day from Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga from the historic Red Road in Kolkata. Thousands of people gathered at the venue early in the morning to participate in the Common Yoga Protocol session. Millions of other practitioners from across India and around the world joined the massive event virtually.

The theme for this year’s observation is Yoga for Healthy Ageing. This specific focus emphasizes the role of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, and active ageing. The government highlighted that the practice expands our healthspan, ensuring that our advancing years are spent in good health and filled with energy.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister noted that June 21 marks the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of the global reach of yoga, this date has now transformed into the largest community celebration day across the globe. He stated that yoga is an expression of the human spirit that helps people live in a balanced manner.

The Ministry of Ayush successfully managed the nationwide events through its digital portals. Over six lakh organizations registered to hold synchronized yoga sessions, turning the celebration into a true citizens’ movement. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Culture organized special yoga sessions at 100 iconic heritage sites across the nation.

Leaders and citizens worldwide participated enthusiastically in the event, recognizing it as India’s gift to global wellness. The event concluded with a strong message to make yoga a permanent part of daily life rather than restricting it to a single day.
