Lokesh Urges Centre for New Schools

The Andhra Pradesh government is making a strong push to strengthen the state’s educational foundation, focusing particularly on providing quality residential schooling to talented students from rural areas. In a recent visit to New Delhi, State Minister Nara Lokesh formally requested the Union Government to sanction the establishment of eleven new Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) for Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring that students across all regions, especially in newly formed districts, have access to excellent learning opportunities.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are known for their high standards, offering modern, quality education free of cost to bright students, with a focus on comprehensive development and national integration. Currently, Andhra Pradesh has a number of these esteemed residential schools, but the recent reorganization of districts necessitates the establishment of additional JNVs to meet the demand and ensure equitable access across the state. The Minister emphasized that these new schools are vital for nurturing rural talent and bringing them on par with their urban counterparts.

During his meeting with the Union Education Minister, the state’s HRD Minister also presented a detailed overview of the ongoing educational reforms within Andhra Pradesh. These reforms are part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance student outcomes at every level. Among the key initiatives highlighted were the launch of the Guaranteed Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) programme, a crucial effort aimed at equipping primary school students with essential reading and mathematics skills. This program is seen as the bedrock for all future learning success.

Furthermore, the Minister informed the Centre about the introduction of a sophisticated Interactive Classroom Response System in government schools. This technology-driven method uses clicker devices to make classroom engagement more dynamic and measure learning outcomes in real-time, moving away from rote learning and fostering a more participatory environment. The new coalition government is committed to a complete overhaul of the education system, aiming to set a new ‘AP Model of Education’ that is focused on excellence and holistic development.

The request for the eleven JNVs was coupled with appeals for other critical resources, including financial assistance under the Central government’s Samagra Shiksha scheme and the STARS Project, which supports teaching and learning reforms. Specifically, a large quantum of funds was requested to support the state’s ambitious plans for infrastructure development, including the construction of new classrooms and the establishment of more Model Primary Schools, one of which is planned for every Panchayat in a phased manner. The government’s proactive approach, combining a request for central institutions like JNVs with state-specific reforms like the FLN programme, signals a determined effort to transform the public education landscape and unlock the full potential of Andhra Pradesh’s youth. The Centre’s timely approval for these proposals will play a key role in accelerating the state’s educational progress.
