India Launches Bid for 2028-29 UNSC Seat

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar officially launched India’s campaign for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. The high-profile event took place at the UN headquarters in New York. Top international diplomats, global envoys, and senior UN officials attended the official launch. The campaign targets a two-year tenure spanning from the year 2028 to 2029.
India unveiled its core vision framework named “SHANTI” to guide its global diplomatic outreach. The acronym stands for Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust, and Integrity. Jaishankar stated that this framework reflects India’s commitment to a fair global order. The country aims to bridge growing international divides through transparent dialogue and cooperation.
Addressing the global gathering, the minister highlighted unprecedented global conflict and economic instability. He emphasized that the current world structure faces severe fragmentation and political gridlock. India plans to actively champion the collective voice of the developing nations. The strategy focuses heavily on ensuring equitable representation for countries in the Global South.
Key priorities for the upcoming term include a massive crackdown on international terror financing. India will also push for stronger maritime security across global trade lifelines. The campaign stresses the importance of responsible governance regarding emerging artificial intelligence technologies. Furthermore, New Delhi demands comprehensive reforms within the core organs of the United Nations.
The elections for this coveted Asia-Pacific category seat will take place next year. India faces a direct electoral contest against Tajikistan for the single available seat. The nation previously served as a non-permanent council member during the 2021-22 term. This marks India’s ninth major bid to sit at the powerful UN horseshoe table.
