Government Responds to Aquaculture Distress

The Andhra Pradesh government has taken control of the critical economic situation developing in the state coastal districts. Agriculture and Fisheries Minister K. Atchannaidu announced that resolving systemic issues in the aquaculture sector is the highest priority for the current administration.
The move comes after a rapid hike in summer shrimp feed prices and a simultaneous drop in processing purchase rates. Aqua farmers across coastal belts have been expressing panic over rising operational costs and potential losses.
During a high-level video conference with the state fisheries department and development authorities, the minister reviewed the pricing structures of necessary raw materials. He stated that the government had closely listened to the problems faced by local farmers, feed manufacturing companies, and exporters.
The summer crop season has seen extreme pressure because raw materials like fish meal and soy have become costly globally. This shift has forced processing mills to demand price hikes, which heavily impacts the profit margins of small-scale aqua farmers.
To address these core issues, the state government is executing balanced structural policies. Plans are underway to establish a transparent, monthly feed pricing mechanism modeled after the poultry sector to avoid sudden market spikes.
Furthermore, the state will implement a fixed shrimp procurement price system every fifteen days. This specific action aims to stop distress harvesting and protect rural farmers from predatory middleman tactics or false market rumors.
The administration is also introducing high-end technological upgrades to ensure transparency and trust in production. The state plans to enforce CCTV-based hatchery surveillance, strict seed traceability tracking, and IoT-based water monitoring systems.
These steps will ensure that the quality of both feed and seed remains high across all licensed hatcheries. High-quality production metrics are necessary to sustain the competitive value of Andhra seafood in the global market.
On the administrative front, the state is preparing a comprehensive report to submit to the Central Government for additional support. This official documentation will seek direct interventions on crucial matters like GM soy import relaxations, customs duty adjustments, and export incentives.
By cooperating with central authorities, the state hopes to bring long-term structural stability to the export economy. The government called upon all processing associations and stakeholders to cooperate closely to safeguard coastal livelihood.
