AP CM Chandrabbau DCM PawanKalyan participate in Vahanamitra scheme launching

In a major relief to thousands of transport workers, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched a direct benefit scheme offering ₹15,000 annually to self-owned auto, motor cab, and maxi cab drivers across the state. The initiative, titled “Auto Driver Sevalo,” aims to ease the financial burden of vehicle maintenance and compliance costs.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu officially rolled out the scheme on October 4, with an allocation of ₹436 crore for FY26. The aid will be credited directly to the bank accounts of over 2.9 lakh eligible drivers, covering expenses such as insurance premiums, fitness certificates, repairs, and routine upkeep.
The scheme replaces the earlier “Vahana Mitra” program and is governed by G.O.Ms.No. 33 issued by the Transport, Roads, and Buildings Department. It reflects the government’s commitment to empowering grassroots-level operators who form the backbone of urban and rural mobility.
Drivers operating in cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, and Guntur, as well as remote areas in East and West Godavari, can benefit from this financial support. The application process was conducted through the Gram/Ward Sachivalayam network, ensuring transparency and accessibility.
Special Chief Secretary Movva Tirumala Krishna Babu emphasized that the scheme is designed to support those who own and operate their vehicles. Goods carriers are excluded, focusing solely on passenger transport services.
The aid is not just financial—it’s symbolic of the state’s recognition of the challenges faced by informal workers. Rising fuel prices, insurance costs, and regulatory compliance have made it difficult for drivers to sustain their livelihoods. This initiative provides a cushion against such pressures.
Transport unions have welcomed the move, calling it a “timely intervention” that will help stabilize incomes and reduce debt burdens. Many drivers had previously struggled to renew vehicle documents or afford basic repairs, leading to operational risks and penalties.
The government also plans to integrate this scheme with broader tourism and mobility initiatives. By supporting auto and cab drivers, Andhra Pradesh aims to improve last-mile connectivity and enhance the travel experience for visitors and residents alike.
In addition to the financial aid, the Cabinet approved caravan tourism parks and homestay incentives under the 2024–29 Tourism Policy. These complementary efforts are expected to create alternate livelihood opportunities and boost local economies.
The Auto Driver Sevalo scheme is a step toward inclusive growth, ensuring that those who serve the public daily are not left behind. It reflects a governance model that values dignity, self-reliance, and economic resilience.
As the festive season begins, this announcement brings hope and stability to thousands of families dependent on the transport sector. Andhra Pradesh’s proactive approach may well become a model for other states to follow.
