Stormy Parliament Start Over Paper Leaks
The Monsoon Session of Parliament got off to a turbulent start as both Houses were repeatedly adjourned following heavy protests from Opposition parties. Opposition members staged noisy demonstrations over question paper leaks and police action against protesting youth in New Delhi, stalling legislative proceedings throughout the opening day.
In the Lok Sabha, scenes of confrontation began during the Question Hour as members raised placards and slogans regarding examination irregularities. Speaker Om Birla appealed for order and urged members to allow smooth proceedings, but persistent slogan-shouting forced multiple adjournments before the House was adjourned for the day.
The Rajya Sabha experienced similar disruptions after completing obituary references and the oath-taking of newly elected members. Opposition leaders demanded an immediate discussion on the impact of examination leaks on young aspirants and raised concerns over student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.
Despite the chaos in the lower house, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced a legislative bill seeking to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges. However, detailed debates could not proceed as slogan-shouting continued from the Opposition benches.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the continuous disruptions, stating that the government remained open to debates on public issues if the House functioned orderly. Opposition members maintained that national student grievances required priority attention and immediate parliamentary debate.
Outside Parliament, political parties held rallies and press conferences to state their positions. Student delegations and activist groups reiterated demands for administrative accountability and stricter safeguards against paper leaks.
Both Houses stand adjourned until the following morning. With major legislative bills scheduled for introduction, parliamentary proceedings are expected to remain intense as Opposition alliances continue pressing for dedicated discussions on testing reforms.
