Political Shifts and Policy Debates Rock Telangana

The Telangana political landscape witnessed a seismic shift on Monday, January 5, 2026, as suspended MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha announced the launch of a new political entity. In an emotional address at the Telangana Legislative Council, Kavitha broke down while defending her self-respect against what she termed “false narratives” spun by the ruling Congress party. She declared that her organization, Telangana Jagruthi, would transform into a full-fledged political party to contest future elections, promising to return to the legislature as a formidable force.
Inside the Legislative Assembly, the atmosphere remained heated as the government moved to discuss the controversial Hyderabad Industrial Lands Transformation (HILT) Policy. Minister for Industries D. Sridhar Babu clarified that the policy aims to rationalize land use by converting roughly 9,292 acres of old industrial plots within the Outer Ring Road into “mixed-use” zones. While the government anticipates generating up to ₹5,000 crore in revenue for new industrial parks, the opposition BRS has labeled the move a “massive land scam” designed to benefit developers.
Financial management also took center stage during the session. Minister Sridhar Babu refuted allegations regarding the trifurcation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), stating that the plan is not driven by a desire to raise fresh debt. Instead, he criticized the previous administration for “indiscriminate borrowings” totaling over ₹6,400 crore at high interest rates. He informed the house that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is currently consulting with major financial institutions to restructure these loans and reduce the state’s interest burden.
On the legal front, the Supreme Court of India began hearing the state government’s petition regarding the high-profile “Snoopgate” phone-tapping case. The state is challenging a previous High Court order that quashed FIRs against senior political figures and police officials.Simultaneously, investigative agencies continued their pressure on the opposition, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) grilling BRS MLC Naveen Kumar for several hours in connection with the same scandal, signaling a deepening of the legal battle.
Beyond the halls of power, the state launched the “Road Suraksha Abhiyan 2026,” a month-long awareness campaign to combat rising motor accident rates. Additionally, IIT-Hyderabad announced a progressive change to its admission policy for the 2026-27 academic year, introducing a special category for students with award-winning innovative projects. These developments highlight a day of significant administrative transitions, legal confrontations, and forward-looking educational reforms across Telangana.
