Parliament Adjourned Amid Opposition Ruckus
Both Houses of Parliament faced repeated disruptions and were adjourned early on Tuesday as Opposition members mounted intense protests over examination irregularities and the recent police crackdown on student demonstrators in the national capital.
The proceedings in the Lok Sabha began on a stormy note, with Opposition lawmakers trooping into the Well of the House while shouting slogans demanding an immediate discussion on paper leak allegations. Despite repeated appeals from the Chair to restore order and allow Question Hour to proceed, lawmakers continued their demonstration.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, along with key representatives from various alliance parties, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla prior to the session to press for a formal debate. They urged the Chair to prioritize the grievances of the youth and examine the accountability of the central administration regarding national competitive exams.
Similar scenes unfolded in the Rajya Sabha, where Opposition members disrupted business within minutes of convening. Sloganeering intensified as members raised concerns about police actions against student groups protesting near public monuments. Treasury bench members responded with counter-slogans, leading the Presiding Officer to suspend proceedings until the afternoon.
During brief periods between adjournments, ministers managed to lay official papers on the table of both Houses. The government also sought to introduce key legislative measures, including an amendment bill related to the Supreme Court’s judicial strength. However, regular legislative work and debates could not take place due to the persistent noise.
Outside the complex, Opposition leaders held press briefings condemning the government’s handling of student grievances. They demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister and called for full transparency regarding examination administrative standards.
Government representatives countered the accusations, stating that the administration remains open to discussing all issues under established parliamentary rules. They accused the Opposition of intentionally stalling legislative business and rejecting constructive debate on the floor of the House.
With no consensus reached between the ruling alliance and the Opposition, both Houses were officially adjourned for the remainder of the day. Lawmakers are scheduled to reassemble on Wednesday morning as political tension over education reforms continues.
