Opposition Slams Centre Over Ujjwala LPG Quota Reduction

A massive political debate has erupted across the country following the central government’s recent decision to modify the subsidized cooking gas distribution policy. According to the new administrative guidelines, the annual quota of subsidized Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinders under the flagship Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has been reduced. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from various political quarters and consumer rights groups who argue that the move will place an unnecessary financial burden on vulnerable families.
The opposition parties have launched a coordinated campaign against the ruling administration, accusing it of being indifferent to the economic challenges faced by low-income households. Senior leaders highlighted that the cooking gas scheme was originally introduced to provide relief to rural women and transition them away from unhealthy traditional firewood. They argued that slashing the annual quota directly undermines the core objective of the welfare program and forces poor families back into fuel insecurity.
Defending the policy change, government representatives stated that the modification was necessary to streamline fiscal resources and ensure better targeting of public subsidies. Officials clarified that the revised quota is based on extensive consumer usage data, which indicates that a significant percentage of beneficiaries do not fully utilize the maximum allocation each year. The ministry assured that alternative welfare measures are being strengthened to support rural development and clean energy accessibility.
Economic analysts point out that while the move will help reduce the central subsidy bill, the political fallout could be substantial ahead of upcoming state elections. Grassroots organizations have already announced nationwide demonstrations to demand an immediate reversal of the decision. As the political confrontation intensifies, the issue is expected to dominate the upcoming parliamentary sessions, with opposition members planning to demand a formal review of the revised energy distribution guidelines.
