India and Nordic Nations Elevate Strategic Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Third India-Nordic Summit held in Oslo, marking a significant milestone in India’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with Northern Europe. The high-level gathering brought together the heads of government from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland to map out a comprehensive blueprint for future cooperation. The participating leaders collectively decided to elevate their multilateral relationship into a dedicated Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership to tackle pressing global challenges.
The Summit provided a timely framework to review the steady progress made in bilateral trade and investments over recent years. Addressing the joint session, the Prime Minister highlighted that commercial exchanges between India and the Nordic economic zone have expanded four-fold over the past decade. He emphasized that combining the specialized sustainability expertise of the Nordic countries with the massive scale and skilled talent pool of India will help create trusted global solutions.
The structural discussions established clear, sector-specific areas of collaboration tailored to the unique strengths of each participating northern country. The agreed framework links Iceland’s advanced capabilities in geothermal energy and sustainable fisheries directly with India’s expanding blue economy initiatives. Similarly, the partnership integrates Norway’s deep maritime expertise, Sweden’s defense manufacturing infrastructure, Finland’s telecommunications advancements, and Denmark’s specialized knowledge in cybersecurity and healthcare technology.
A major focus of the high-level dialogue centered on enhancing economic integration following recent landmark trade developments. The Prime Minister encouraged northern corporate entities to expand their presence within the Indian market, pointing to the opportunities opened by the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. He specifically invited Nordic institutional investors to explore emerging financial avenues within Gujarat’s GIFT City and to back large-scale green hydrogen projects.
Beyond industrial cooperation, the leaders underscored their shared commitment to maintaining a transparent, rules-based international order founded on democratic values. The collaborative agenda also outlines deep exchanges at the grassroots level, focusing on joint research programs between top universities and cross-border startup incubators. This comprehensive diplomatic milestone in Oslo successfully sets a highly progressive trajectory for India’s strategic outreach across Northern Europe.
