Gunfire Echoes in Kulgam Forest as Security Forces Corner Terrorists in Prolonged Encounter

Kulgam, Jammu & Kashmir —
A high-stakes counterterror operation is underway in the dense Akhal forest region of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, where security forces have cornered a group of heavily armed terrorists. The encounter, now in its third day, has intensified with intermittent gunfire and tactical maneuvers unfolding deep within the forest terrain.

The operation began on Friday morning following precise intelligence inputs about terrorist presence. A joint team comprising the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF swiftly launched a cordon and search mission. As forces closed in, the terrorists opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange.

So far, three terrorists have been neutralized, with two more believed to be trapped. One of the deceased has been identified as Haris Nazir Dar, a local operative affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba. The remaining identities are yet to be confirmed.

Security forces have deployed drones, helicopters, and thermal imaging devices to track movement within the forest. Elite Para Special Forces have joined the mission, tightening the perimeter and maintaining contact with the trapped militants.

Two soldiers sustained injuries during the initial exchange and are currently receiving medical care. Their condition is reported to be stable.

This operation, codenamed “Operation Akhal,” is part of a broader crackdown on terror networks in the region. It follows recent successful missions including Operation Mahadev and Operation Shiv Shakti, which led to the elimination of multiple high-profile terrorists involved in cross-border infiltration and attacks.

The forested terrain and unpredictable weather have added complexity to the mission, but forces remain resolute. Reinforcements have been rushed in to prevent any escape attempts, and the cordon has been expanded.

Local residents have been advised to stay indoors, and authorities have assured that all necessary precautions are being taken to safeguard civilians.

As the operation continues, the region remains on high alert. The outcome of this prolonged engagement is expected to have significant implications for counterterror efforts in South Kashmir. Further updates will follow as the situation evolves.
