Activist Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Hospital Amid Protest

A major political standoff erupted in New Delhi as the Delhi Police shifted prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from his protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital. The administrative action occurred during the early hours, following the 21st day of Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike. Security forces moved into the venue under medical grounds, citing the activist’s rapidly deteriorating physical health parameters.

According to official statements, the decision to transfer the activist was made in strict compliance with recent directives from the Delhi High Court. The court had emphasized the necessity of daily medical monitoring to safeguard the individual’s life amid prolonged fasting. Medical professionals reported significant weight loss and related health complications, advising immediate intervention to prevent organ damage.

The protest, organized in collaboration with the Cockroach Janta Party, focuses heavily on national education framework grievances. Protesters are actively demanding structural accountability and the resignation of senior education ministry officials over widespread examination irregularities and recent paper leaks. The demonstration had gained significant momentum ahead of a planned march to Parliament scheduled for July 20.

The sudden hospital transfer triggered immediate tension at the demonstration venue. Several supporting activists expressed strong objections to the police movement, leading to brief skirmishes and the temporary detention of key organizers. While authorities have cordoned off the immediate perimeter to maintain public order, opposition leaders have sharply questioned the move, terming the handling of the peaceful agitation heavy-handed.

Hospital bulletins indicate that Wangchuk remains under close medical observation in the emergency facility. However, reports suggest he has initially declined intravenous fluids and supplemental treatments while his family requests transparent communication regarding his ongoing care. Despite the administrative intervention, remaining group leaders have announced that the wider public campaign will continue as planned.
