Telangana Leads with SC Sub-Categorization Reform

Telangana has officially become the first state in India to implement Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-categorization. Speaking at a major event in Hyderabad on Friday, March 6, 2026, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy confirmed that the government has granted legal backing to this classification. This decision follows a landmark Supreme Court ruling and addresses a decades-long demand by the Madiga community. The Chief Minister emphasized that while political pressures were high, the government prioritized social justice and the upliftment of the most backward sections within the SC community.
During his address at Shilpakala Vedika, the Chief Minister highlighted that education is the most potent tool for community progress. He noted that while previous administrations focused on distributing assets like livestock, the current government aims to empower youth to become doctors, engineers, and lawyers. He also addressed the state’s financial situation, urging government employees to act as the “eyes and ears” of the administration. With over 1,000 employees retiring monthly, he stressed the need for efficient tax collection and leak-proof governance to manage the state’s significant retirement benefit obligations.
In the legislative arena, the Telangana State Assembly approved the Telangana GST (Amendment) Bill 2026 amid intense debate. The session saw a walkout by MIM legislators who argued the bill could lead the state into a debt trap. Simultaneously, the Speaker of the Assembly reserved his verdict on a high-profile MLA disqualification case involving Kadiyam Srihari. This legal development is part of a broader series of petitions against several MLAs who shifted from the BRS to the Congress party, keeping the political climate in the state tense.
Outside the Assembly, Backward Classes (BC) leaders held a significant meeting in Hyderabad demanding a 42% reservation quota and a nation-wide caste census. In opposition, BRS leaders continued their critique of the government, with MLC Dasoju Sravan demanding compensation for victims of a construction accident in Tolichowki. Meanwhile, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao received an invitation to the India Today Conclave 2026 to discuss the “Telangana Model” on a national stage. As the Chief Minister prepares for infrastructure foundations tomorrow, the day’s events underscore a state focused on deep-rooted social reform and fiscal management.
