Rushikonda Palace Sparks Political Storm

The Rushikonda resort project in Visakhapatnam has once again ignited fierce political debate across Andhra Pradesh. Built at a staggering cost of ₹450 crore by the previous government, the palatial structure—dubbed “Rushikonda Palace” by critics—now stands at the center of controversy.

The newly formed Group of Ministers (GoM), led by Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, is tasked with deciding the future of this luxury facility. Their mandate includes exploring public-friendly uses for the property, which was originally planned as a camp office for former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan recently visited the site and raised concerns about construction quality, budget escalation, and environmental violations. He proposed converting the complex into a hub for conferences, exhibitions, and weddings—ensuring public benefit and long-term revenue.

The resort’s origins trace back to the demolition of an older APTDC facility in 2021. Critics argue that the new structure prioritizes political ambition over tourism development. Supporters of the previous regime defend the project as a strategic move to boost Visakhapatnam’s profile.

The GoM is expected to submit its recommendations soon. Meanwhile, public access to the site remains restricted, and questions linger about transparency, accountability, and future utilization.

Local activists have demanded an audit of the project’s finances and environmental impact. Citizens are watching closely, as the decision could reshape Visakhapatnam’s tourism narrative.

The Rushikonda issue has also become a flashpoint in the broader debate over decentralization and capital relocation. With elections behind and a new government in place, the spotlight is firmly on how this ₹450 crore asset will be repurposed.

As the debate intensifies, Rushikonda symbolizes more than just a resort—it reflects the clash between legacy politics and public interest. The outcome will likely influence future infrastructure planning across the state.

For now, the palace remains silent, awaiting its next chapter.
