No Work No Pay New Proposal for AP Lawmakers

Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu has introduced a bold proposal to change how lawmakers are held accountable. Speaking at a national conference in Lucknow, he suggested a “No Work, No Pay” policy for MLAs who skip assembly sessions. The Speaker expressed deep concern over members who draw full salaries and allowances despite never attending a single debate or session.

The proposal comes as 11 members from the opposition YSRCP continue to boycott the assembly proceedings. Patrudu noted that since the June 2024 elections, some representatives have been completely absent. He argued that it is unfair for public money to be used for salaries when the legislative duties are not being performed. He believes this step will restore public trust in the democratic system.

Beyond salary cuts, the Speaker also suggested a “Right to Recall” law. This would allow the public to vote out representatives who fail to show up for work. Patrudu has requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to consider amending the Constitution to make these changes possible. He emphasized that legislatures should function for at least 60 days a year to solve people’s problems effectively.

This move aims to ensure that every elected leader participates in the Question Hour and public debates. By linking pay to participation, the government hopes to end political boycotts that hinder state progress. The Speaker’s suggestions have sparked a major debate across the country regarding the ethical behavior of elected officials.
