Modi Opens Navi Mumbai’s New Airport

India’s aviation landscape took a major leap forward as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The project is set to transform regional connectivity and ease congestion in Mumbai.

Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, the airport spans 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in its initial phase. Once fully operational, it will serve up to 90 million passengers and manage over 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo.

This is Mumbai’s second international airport, developed under a Public-Private Partnership model. It complements the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and positions Mumbai among global multi-airport cities.

The airport features a lotus-inspired architectural design and is India’s first fully digital airport. It offers automated baggage handling, digital immigration, and real-time travel updates via a dedicated app.

Environmental sustainability is a core focus. The facility includes a 47 MW solar power system, storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, and electric bus services for public transport.

The airport will be linked to the city via metro, road, and water taxi services. An Automated People Mover system will connect all four terminals internally, ensuring smooth passenger movement.

The airport is expected to boost trade and tourism across Mumbai, Pune, and the Konkan region. It will also reduce export costs for small industries and open new markets for farmers and entrepreneurs.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.

Alongside the airport, PM Modi also launched Phase 2B of Mumbai Metro Line 3. This fully underground corridor connects key business hubs and is expected to serve 13 lakh commuters daily.

The Prime Minister introduced the ‘Mumbai One’ app, integrating 11 public transport services under one platform. It enables cashless payments, ticketing, and real-time updates for commuters.

Modi also launched the STEP initiative, aimed at aligning technical education with industry needs. The program will be rolled out across 400 ITIs and 150 technical schools in Maharashtra.

The airport’s terminal interiors will showcase Indian art and culture through digital installations, blending tradition with modern infrastructure.

Domestic operations are set to begin soon, with international flights expected by December. Airlines like IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express have confirmed participation.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport marks a new chapter in India’s infrastructure journey. With its blend of technology, sustainability, and connectivity, it sets a benchmark for future developments.
