Jagan Reddy Summoned by CBI Court in Assets Case
The political sphere in Andhra Pradesh is focused on Hyderabad, where the Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court has ordered former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to ensure his personal appearance by November 21. Mr. Reddy, who is currently out on bail in the case, had initially sought an exemption from a prior court order requiring his attendance on November 14, following his return from an overseas visit. During the recent court session, legal counsel representing Mr. Reddy informed the Special CBI Court Judge that the former Chief Minister would comply with the judicial directive and appear in person.They subsequently withdrew the memo that had sought exemption from attendance.The court then dismissed the exemption plea and set the deadline for his appearance as November 21.
The case itself revolves around alleged financial irregularities, often referred to as a “quid pro quo” arrangement, that are claimed to have occurred during the tenure of his late father, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh between 2004 and 2009.The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have alleged that various companies and individuals invested heavily, sometimes at inflated values, into businesses linked to Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy, such as Jagathi Publications and Bharathi Cements.
In exchange for these investments, investigators claim that the companies received favorable treatment from the state government at the time, including land allotments, mining licenses, and other regulatory clearances.These allegations are documented in multiple charge sheets filed by the CBI, making the case one of the most significant legal battles involving a top political figure in the Telugu states.
