India–ASEAN Ties Enter Strategic Phase

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 22nd India–ASEAN Summit virtually from New Delhi, declaring that the 21st century belongs to India and ASEAN. His speech marked a pivotal moment in India’s regional diplomacy, emphasizing deeper cooperation in trade, security, and cultural exchange.
Modi reaffirmed ASEAN’s role as a cornerstone of India’s Act East Policy. He highlighted historical and civilizational bonds between India and Southeast Asia, calling for a future built on mutual respect, shared values, and inclusive growth.
The Prime Minister announced that 2026 will be celebrated as the “Year of India–ASEAN Maritime Cooperation.” This initiative aims to enhance collaboration in maritime security, disaster response, and blue economy development across the Indian Ocean region.
India proposed new frameworks to boost trade with ASEAN nations, focusing on digital connectivity, sustainable development, and supply chain resilience. Modi emphasized the need to reduce barriers and promote innovation-driven partnerships.
Modi called for expanded cultural programs, student exchanges, and joint research initiatives. He stressed that people-to-people ties are essential for building long-term trust and understanding between nations.
India expressed readiness to deepen strategic dialogue with ASEAN on regional security, counter-terrorism, and cyber defense. Modi underscored the importance of a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
The summit welcomed East Timor as the 11th member of the ASEAN community. Modi congratulated the nation and expressed hope for its active role in regional development and cooperation.
Modi linked ASEAN cooperation to India’s broader global vision, including the goals of “Viksit Bharat 2047.” He stated that India’s rise will be inclusive, peaceful, and beneficial to humanity.
The virtual format of the summit allowed India to maintain diplomatic momentum while balancing domestic commitments. Modi’s message was seen as a blend of strategic clarity and cultural outreach.
India and ASEAN are expected to launch joint working groups on maritime law, climate resilience, and digital governance. The summit laid the groundwork for a new era of regional integration and shared leadership.
