Hyderabad Metro Expansion Clears Final DPR for Airport Link

Hyderabad’s long-awaited metro link to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has taken a major step forward. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Airport Corridor has been finalized and approved, paving the way for construction to begin in early 2026.

The new 31-kilometer stretch will connect Raidurg to Shamshabad, offering direct metro access to the airport for lakhs of commuters. The corridor will be elevated, with 23 stations planned along the route, including key stops at Nanakramguda, Financial District, and Gachibowli.

This expansion is part of Phase-II of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, which aims to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the city’s western corridor. The Airport Metro is expected to be completed by mid-2028 and will operate at a speed of 80 km/h, ensuring swift transit for travelers and tech professionals alike.

The Telangana government has allocated ₹6,250 crore for the project, with funding support from the Centre and international agencies. Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which executed Phase-I, is expected to lead the construction, pending final tender approvals.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has emphasized the importance of this corridor in transforming Hyderabad into a global city. The metro link will not only ease airport access but also boost commercial growth along the corridor.

Urban planners have welcomed the move, noting that the metro will integrate with existing MMTS and bus networks. Special attention is being given to intermodal hubs and pedestrian-friendly station designs.

Environmental clearance has been secured, and land acquisition for the corridor is underway. The project will use pre-cast technology to speed up construction and minimize disruption to traffic.

The Airport Metro will also feature smart ticketing, real-time tracking, and energy-efficient coaches. Authorities are exploring solar panel installations on station rooftops to reduce operational costs.

Public response has been overwhelmingly positive, with citizens expressing relief over improved connectivity. Many IT professionals and frequent flyers see this as a game-changer for Hyderabad’s infrastructure.

The metro expansion aligns with the city’s growing status as a tech and pharma hub. With major companies setting up campuses in the Financial District and beyond, the need for reliable transport has never been greater.

This corridor is expected to serve over 3 lakh passengers daily once operational. It will also reduce carbon emissions by cutting down on vehicular traffic to the airport.

The DPR approval marks a turning point in Hyderabad’s urban mobility story. As the city prepares for its next leap, the Airport Metro stands as a symbol of progress, planning, and public service.

Construction is expected to begin in Q1 2026, with phased rollout of stations starting in late 2027. The final stretch to the airport will be operational by mid-2028, offering seamless travel from the city’s heart to its gateway.
