Azharuddin Joins Cabinet, Eyes Key Role

Mohammad Azharuddin, the former Indian cricket captain, has officially stepped into a new innings—this time in politics. On October 31, 2025, Azharuddin was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in Telangana, marking a significant milestone in his political journey.

The oath ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad, with Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administering the pledge. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy welcomed Azharuddin into his team, making him the 16th member of the current cabinet.

Azharuddin’s induction is seen as both symbolic and strategic. As the first Muslim face in the Revanth-led cabinet, his presence is expected to strengthen minority representation and add star power to the Congress-led government.

The timing of his appointment—just days before the Jubilee Hills by-election—has sparked political debate. While Congress leaders hail the move as inclusive, opposition parties have criticized it as vote-bank politics.

Azharuddin expressed gratitude to the Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, for their trust. He also thanked CM Revanth Reddy for the opportunity to serve the people of Telangana.

The former cricketer, who played 99 Tests for India, noted the coincidence of his cricket debut and ministerial oath both falling on the 31st of the month. “31 is indeed my lucky number,” he quipped.

Speculation is rife about the portfolio Azharuddin might receive. Sources suggest he could be entrusted with the Home or Minority Welfare department, given his public appeal and community connect.

Political analysts believe Azharuddin’s entry could energize urban voters and bring a fresh narrative to Congress campaigns in Telangana.

His journey from cricketing legend to parliamentarian began in 2009, when he won the Moradabad Lok Sabha seat. Though he faced setbacks in later elections, his commitment to public service remained steady.

Azharuddin also served as the Working President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, playing a key role in party strategy and outreach.

The cabinet reshuffle comes amid growing pressure on the Revanth government to deliver on promises made during the assembly elections. Azharuddin’s inclusion is expected to bring visibility and momentum.

Supporters gathered outside Raj Bhavan to cheer the new minister, holding placards and chanting slogans in celebration.

Social media platforms lit up with congratulatory messages, with hashtags like #AzharuddinMinister and #NewInnings trending across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The cricketing fraternity also extended warm wishes, with former teammates praising Azharuddin’s leadership and discipline.

As he takes charge, Azharuddin faces the challenge of translating his popularity into policy. His ability to navigate governance will be closely watched.

The coming days will reveal whether he secures the Home portfolio or another key department. Either way, his presence adds weight to the cabinet.

For now, Azharuddin’s political innings has begun with promise, purpose, and public attention.
