AP CM Unveils Free Power and ₹25,000 Annual Aid for Weavers

In a major boost to the handloom sector, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has announced a landmark welfare package for the state’s weaving community. The initiative includes free electricity and an annual financial aid of ₹25,000 for eligible weavers, aimed at easing their operational burdens and preserving traditional craftsmanship.
The announcement was made during a public interaction with weaving families, where the CM emphasized the government’s commitment to uplift rural artisans. This move is expected to benefit thousands of families across districts like East Godavari, Guntur, and Anantapur, where handloom work remains a primary livelihood.
Key Highlights of the Scheme:
- Free power supply for looms and weaving units.
- ₹25,000 direct benefit transfer every year to registered weavers.
- Simplified registration process through village secretariats.
- Dedicated helpline for scheme-related queries and grievance redressal.
Officials confirmed that the scheme will be rolled out in phases, starting with clusters that have high concentrations of weavers. Beneficiaries must be registered with the Handloom Department and possess valid Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
The CM stated that this initiative is not just financial support but a recognition of the cultural and economic value that weavers bring to Andhra Pradesh. He also hinted at future plans to introduce skill development workshops and market linkages to help artisans expand their reach.
Local weaving associations welcomed the announcement, calling it a long-awaited relief. Many expressed hope that the aid would help them cope with rising raw material costs and declining demand.
The government has also proposed to set up handloom hubs in select towns, offering shared infrastructure, design support, and marketing assistance. These hubs will function as one-stop centers for training, production, and sales.
In addition to financial aid, the CM promised to waive pending power bills for weavers who faced disruptions during the pandemic. This gesture was met with applause from the community, many of whom had struggled to keep their looms running.
The scheme is expected to revive interest among younger generations, who have been moving away from traditional weaving due to financial instability. By ensuring consistent support, the government hopes to make handloom work a viable and respected profession once again.
District collectors have been instructed to conduct awareness drives and ensure that no eligible weaver is left out. Special camps will be held in villages to assist with documentation and onboarding.
This announcement marks a significant step in safeguarding Andhra Pradesh’s rich textile heritage while empowering the hands that keep it alive.
The CM concluded by saying, “Our weavers are the pride of our state. Their threads carry stories, traditions, and dreams. It is our duty to support them—not just with words, but with action.”
Very good initiative. Atleast govt is thinking about handloom sector
Chala late ayindi but better than nothing. Hope this reaches real weavers.
Good move but 25k per year is not enough. Power bills are high
Not sure if this will actually be implemented. Looks like election gimmick.
Super anna! Mana weavers ki support icharu finally.
