Parliament Erupts Over India-US Trade Agreement

The Lok Sabha witnessed intense scenes today as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a fierce critique of the new interim trade deal with the United States. During his speech on the Union Budget, the Congress leader accused the government of compromising the country’s sovereignty. He claimed the agreement favors American interests over Indian farmers and small businesses.
According to the opposition, the deal allows highly mechanized American farms to flood the Indian market, which could hurt local producers. Gandhi argued that the government has essentially handed over control of India’s energy security and data to a foreign power. He used strong language, asking the treasury benches if they were “ashamed” of the terms signed under the current administration.
The government quickly hit back at these allegations. Union Ministers defended the deal as a historic step that secures India’s place in the global supply chain. They stated that the agreement actually protects national interests while opening up new opportunities for Indian exports. The ruling party accused the opposition of spreading “misinformation” to stall the country’s economic progress.
The debate also touched on digital sovereignty. Gandhi highlighted that Indian data is a massive asset that should not be given away cheaply. He insisted that any trade talk must happen on equal terms, where India is treated as a global power. The exchange led to multiple interruptions in the House, with the Speaker calling for decorum several times.
As the Budget Session continues, this trade controversy is expected to remain a major point of conflict. Both sides are preparing for further debates in the coming days. For now, the public remains focused on how these international agreements will impact local prices and job opportunities in the long run.
