National Youth Congress President Taken Into Custody

The Delhi Police on Tuesday formally arrested Uday Bhanu Chib, the National President of the Indian Youth Congress, following an intense 15-hour interrogation session. The arrest is linked to a controversial protest staged last week during the high-profile AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam.

Authorities have accused Chib of being a primary strategist behind the demonstration, where several youth wing members allegedly removed their shirts to reveal political slogans. Following his arrest, he was produced before a Delhi court, which granted the police a four-day custody period to further investigate the matter.

The protest has sparked a significant political firestorm. While the ruling party criticized the act as disruptive to an international event, senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have come out in strong support of Chib. They characterized the demonstration as a peaceful exercise of democratic rights and condemned the arrest as an attempt to silence political criticism.

In response to the detention, Youth Congress units across several states, including Rajasthan and West Bengal, have launched protest marches. The legal team representing the IYC chief argued in court that the charges are an overreach, maintaining that holding a mirror to power is an act of patriotism rather than a criminal conspiracy.
