Nara Lokesh’s “Cleaning” Drive at Andhra University

The Education Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nara Lokesh, has initiated a rigorous “cleanup” drive at Andhra University, aimed at restoring the institution’s academic integrity. This move follows allegations that the university had deviated from its educational mission to serve as a hub for political activities over the past few years.

During a high-level review, the Minister expressed deep concern over the reported misuse of university resources. He emphasized that educational institutions must remain sanctuaries of learning, free from the influence of political parties. Lokesh pointed out that several administrative decisions made previously appeared to favor specific political ideologies rather than academic excellence.

A key focus of this initiative is the scrutiny of recent appointments and land allocations. The government is investigating claims that individuals with strong political affiliations were placed in significant positions without following due process. Lokesh stated that if any irregularities are found, the appointments will be nullified to ensure that only qualified professionals lead the university.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the need for transparency in the university’s financial dealings. There have been reports of funds being diverted for non-academic purposes. The “cleaning” drive includes a comprehensive audit of the university’s accounts to track every rupee spent and ensure it contributes to student welfare and research infrastructure.

The drive also extends to the physical campus environment. Lokesh has ordered the removal of all political hoardings and symbols from the premises. He noted that the campus atmosphere should inspire students to focus on their careers and innovation, rather than being distracted by partisan rivalries or political campaigning within the walls of the college.

To ensure the success of this reform, the government plans to implement a merit-based system for all future recruitment. This system will be strictly monitored by an independent committee to prevent any future political interference. The goal is to elevate Andhra University back to its former glory as a premier global destination for higher education.

Student groups and faculty members have largely welcomed the move, though some have called for a fair process that does not result in a “witch hunt.” In response, the Minister assured that the drive is not about targeting individuals but about upholding the sanctity of the institution. He invited stakeholders to provide suggestions for improving the university’s ranking.

As the investigation progresses, the state government remains committed to making Andhra Pradesh an education hub. By distancing universities from active politics, Lokesh believes the state can attract more investments in the research sector. This initiative at Andhra University is expected to serve as a blueprint for reforms in other state-run universities across Andhra Pradesh.
