Lok Sabha Passes Bill Naming Amaravati as Sole Capital

In a landmark decision for the people of Andhra Pradesh, the Lok Sabha on Wednesday officially passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026. This historic legislation provides statutory status to Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of the state, ending years of administrative uncertainty.

The bill was passed by a voice vote with support from major political parties, including the BJP, TDP, and Congress. By amending the 2014 Reorganisation Act, the central government has now legally solidified Amaravati’s position. This move effectively prevents any future attempts to shift the capital or implement a multi-city model.

During the debate, Union Ministers highlighted that the people of Andhra Pradesh have long awaited this clarity. They noted that farmers in the region had made significant sacrifices by giving up their lands for the capital’s construction. The passing of this bill is seen as a fulfillment of those promises and a tribute to their contribution.

The new law recognizes Amaravati as the capital with retroactive effect from June 2, 2024. This date marks the end of the 10-year period during which Hyderabad served as the joint capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. With this legal hurdle cleared, the path is now open for large-scale infrastructure development.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu hailed the decision as a victory for the five crore people of the state. He reiterated his vision to transform Amaravati into a world-class “Blue-Green” city. The government plans to develop it as a self-sustaining economic hub and a center for quantum hardware and modern technology.

While most parties supported the move, some members raised concerns regarding the timeline for farmer compensation and the need for Special Category Status for the state. Despite these discussions, the consensus remained focused on the necessity of a fixed administrative center for stable governance.

Moving forward, the focus shifts to the physical development of the Secretariat, High Court, and Assembly buildings. Experts believe that statutory clarity will attract global investors and boost the state’s economy. Amaravati is now set to evolve into a major metropolitan center alongside cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

This legislation brings a sense of permanence to the state’s identity. For residents, it means more jobs, better infrastructure, and a clear direction for the future. The passage of the bill marks the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new era for Andhra Pradesh.
