Jagan Proposes MAVIGUN as New Capital Hub

The political landscape in Andhra Pradesh has shifted following a bold new proposal from former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. During a recent press conference, he introduced a concept called “MAVIGUN,” which stands for the urban cluster of Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur. He suggests this 110-kilometre corridor should serve as the state’s primary economic and administrative engine instead of focusing solely on the greenfield development of Amaravati.
Jagan Mohan Reddy argued that building a massive city from scratch in Amaravati requires an investment of nearly ₹2 lakh crore, which he claims is financially unviable. By contrast, he believes the MAVIGUN region already possesses the necessary roads, buildings, and population to function as a capital with minimal additional spending. He estimated that only 10% of the current Amaravati budget would be enough to transform this existing corridor into a world-class metropolitan zone.
The ruling NDA government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, quickly dismissed the idea. Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu called the plan a “political drama” designed to create confusion among the public. The government remains firm on its commitment to Amaravati, especially after recent legislative moves in Parliament solidified its status as the permanent capital. Leaders from the TDP and its allies insist that work is already progressing at a rapid pace with clear financial backing.
This debate highlights two very different visions for the future of the state. While the current administration views a dedicated, grand capital as a symbol of pride and a magnet for global investment, the opposition emphasizes cost-cutting and distributed growth through existing cities. This clash of ideas is expected to remain a central theme in the state’s political discussions as major construction projects continue across the region.
The common citizen is watching these developments closely, as the choice between these two models will determine how tax money is spent over the next decade. For now, the “war of words” over MAVIGUN has added a fresh layer to the long-standing capital dispute, ensuring that the development of Andhra Pradesh remains at the forefront of the national conversation.
