INDIA Bloc Moves Against Lok Sabha Speaker

The Indian Parliament faced a historic standoff , as the opposition INDIA bloc initiated a move for a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla. This decision was finalized during a high-level meeting of floor leaders at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The opposition has accused the Speaker of a partisan approach, claiming that the voice of the opposition is being systematically suppressed in the House.

The immediate trigger for this move was the refusal to allow Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to speak during the crucial Budget discussions. Tensions have been simmering since the previous week, especially after the Speaker made public comments suggesting he advised the Prime Minister to stay away from the House due to potential “security threats” from opposition members. The Congress and its allies labeled these remarks as baseless and an insult to the dignity of elected members.

By the afternoon, reports confirmed that over 100 MPs had signed the notice for the Speaker’s removal under Article 94 of the Constitution. While the ruling coalition dismissed the move as a publicity stunt, asserting they have the numbers to defeat any such motion, the legislative process remained paralyzed. The Lok Sabha was adjourned multiple times without transacting any significant business, as the stalemate between the Treasury and Opposition benches showed no signs of resolving.

This development marks one of the few instances in Indian parliamentary history where a sitting Speaker has faced such a formal challenge. Political analysts suggest that while the motion may not pass due to the government’s majority, it serves as a powerful symbolic protest. As the Budget session continues, the nation watches to see if the House can find a middle ground or if this deadlock will further impact the country’s legislative schedule.
