Congress Sweeps Rajya Sabha as BRS Opts Out

In a major political shift, the Congress party secured both Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana unopposed . Candidates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy were declared winners after the main opposition, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), decided not to field any candidates. This victory is seen as a significant boost for Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, as the Congress technically lacked the numbers to win both seats without opposition support or strategic abstentions.
Responding to the development, BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) announced that the party is shifting its focus to the upcoming Budget Session. The BRS plans to introduce a Private Member Bill demanding legal backing for the “Six Guarantees” promised by the Congress during the elections. KTR alleged that nearly half of the government’s tenure has passed without fulfilling these core promises, and the bill aims to hold the administration legally accountable to the public.
Adding to the state’s political drama, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to former Intelligence Chief T. Prabhakar Rao in the ongoing phone-tapping case. The court’s decision offers temporary relief to the former official while the investigation into unauthorized surveillance during the previous regime continues. Meanwhile, a local court in Nampalli dismissed a long-standing 2011 agitation-case against BRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao and other leaders, citing a lack of evidence.
On the administrative front, Telangana’s new Governor, Shiv Pratap Shukla, arrived in Hyderabad and was officially received by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the airport. His arrival marks a new chapter in the state’s executive leadership. Simultaneously, the state recorded its highest-ever energy consumption on March 9, reaching 335.89 million units, which Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka hailed as a sign of robust industrial and agricultural growth under the current governance.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also spent the day focusing on urban infrastructure, inaugurating the rejuvenated Nalla Cheruvu lake in Kukatpally. During the event, he reiterated his government’s resolve to restore Hyderabad’s water bodies and remove encroachments. He promised that the Musi River rejuvenation project would proceed despite political criticism, aiming to protect the city from future flood threats while providing modern public amenities for residents.
