Chandrababu Naidu Secures Major Water and Capital Pledges in Delhi

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu completed a high-stakes diplomatic mission in New Delhi today, securing vital commitments for Andhra Pradesh’s infrastructure. In a series of intensive meetings, the Chief Minister focused on the state’s lifeline, the Polavaram irrigation project, and the legal status of the state capital.

During his meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Naidu successfully pushed for the permanent removal of stop-work orders on the Polavaram project. He presented a detailed case for an additional ₹32,000 crore required for Phase II, covering critical land acquisition and rehabilitation. The Centre has signaled positive support for these long-pending clearances.

Beyond irrigation, the Chief Minister met with Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the statutory backing of Amaravati. Reports indicate the Union Cabinet is preparing a bill to grant Amaravati permanent legal status as the state capital, a move intended to restore investor confidence. Naidu requested this bill be introduced in the upcoming parliamentary session.

The visit also addressed regional water disputes. Naidu voiced strong objections to Karnataka’s plans to increase the height of the Almatti dam, warning of its impact on downstream flows. He urged the Centre to notify the Vamsadhara Tribunal report to allow for the construction of the Neradi Barrage, essential for the state’s northern districts.

On the home front, the political atmosphere remains tense as the state prepares for the Budget session starting tomorrow. While Naidu secures gains in the capital, opposition leader Jagan Mohan Reddy has challenged the state’s economic data, setting the stage for a heated legislative assembly session in Amaravati.
