BJP Wins Historic Mayor Post in Karimnagar

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a significant political milestone today, by securing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions in the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation. This victory marks the first time since the formation of Telangana in 2014 that the BJP will lead a major Municipal Corporation in the state. The result has sent waves through the political landscape of North Telangana.
In the high-stakes indirect election held this afternoon, BJP’s Kolagani Srinivas was elected as the Mayor, while Y. Sunil Rao took the oath as the Deputy Mayor. The BJP candidate secured 34 votes, comfortably defeating the Congress rival who managed 21 votes. The victory was made possible after the party consolidated its strength by gaining the support of key independent corporators following the general ward results declared earlier this week.
The election process was marked by intense political drama as all nine newly elected corporators from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chose to abstain from voting. This move by the BRS significantly altered the voting math, paving a smoother path for the BJP. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who represents the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat, joined the celebrations, attributing the win to the “Prime Minister’s development agenda.”
For the BJP, this win is viewed as a strategic breakthrough ahead of the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. Party leaders stated that the “Karimnagar Model” of governance would now focus on transparent administration and central government-funded infrastructure projects. The saffron party had previously highlighted local civic issues and criticized the ruling Congress government’s handling of urban development during the campaign.
While the Congress party has swept the majority of municipalities across the state today, the loss of Karimnagar serves as a notable exception. Political analysts suggest that this triangular contest between Congress, BJP, and BRS has redefined traditional strongholds. With the new leadership now officially sworn in, residents of Karimnagar look forward to the implementation of promised urban reforms and improved public amenities.
